EASTER is the season of new life or, in this little joey's case, a second chance at life.

The 4 1/2-month-old baby kangaroo was rescued by Leonie Allan's pointer Rex on Easter Sunday. The joey's mother was killed by a car near Ms Allan's property at Bells Beach, near Torquay.

"I'd taken Rex for a walk and we'd gone past the dead kangaroo that morning, and later I was working out the front and he started pointing," Ms Allan said.

"I was worried he'd found a snake and called him back, but when he returned he dropped the joey at my feet."

Amazingly, the 10-year-old dog - a cross between German shorthaired and wirehaired pointers - had been so gentle with the joey, the baby was both calm and unmarked.

"The joey was snuggling up to him, jumping up to him and Rex was sniffing and licking him - it was quite cute," Ms Allan said.

The joey, to be named Rex Jr after his saviour, is now being cared for at Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary.
